It's always important to keep pushing yourself to learn more about your own style as an artist as well as your camera. I will be uploading some more advanced classes over the next few months to further your in-camera photography skills!
Someone recently asked me for some "starting out" tips on photography. What do you do to start shooting something? How do you shoot something? Ect. Now these tips are what I am recommending, everyone has a different approach to learning!
At the beginning of December I purchased a vintage lens on Etsy called a Helios 44-2. Its a 58mm, f2, manual lens once made in the USSR. I bought it after reading about its cult following through its ability to create "swirly" bokeh.
Filters are a big part of my learning experience at Vantage. Prior to this placement I didn’t think much of filters. 3000+ Filters, in house, many of Vantage's own creation- I had to put some to the test. My favourite, The Bethke Effect, are the ones that I continue to talk on and on about. Enjoy a cute little test we did.
It is my first day at my work placement at Vantage film- one of the greatest rental companies on Earth and manufacturers of the infamous Hawk lenses. It’s a household name for the industry and camera department and today, I begin working there.
Last year, in Poland, I attended a wonderful festival called Camerimage. It is the predominant international festival for cinematography. Professionals from all aspects from the industry are drawn to it from all corners of the globe for a week of learning, networking and watching great films. It was at this festival in 2014 that I met a wonderful company called Vantage film.
What do you do when you are two hours away from the Czech border? Drive to Prague of course! Sheena and I decided to do a road trip to Prague for halloween weekend. Sheena has been probably around 15 times before but for me, it was my first time!
There are places in the woods you may never find yourself. Deep in the green mossy thick of it, each step sinking you deeper and deeper into the earth. You may look up at the blinding light coming through the trees and notice just how tall they are.
In August, I had the chance to visit the infamous Martha’s Vineyard. You may know it as the whale shaped island off the coast of Massachusetts in the USA that is known for its beautiful summer vacationing and where Obama spends his summers. But, if you are like me, you’ll know it as the filming location for Jaws.
Have I ever said how great Toronto is in the summer? I mean, it's great all year round but in the summer, you can't stay indoors- there are so many festivals- film, food, music, photography and celebration.
In addition to learning about retouching in Photoshop, I have been exploring plugins and textures to add to your photos. After an online seminar with Kathleen Clemons (also from CL) about Fine Art Flower Photography- it opened up a world of inspiration and possibility.
Every year, Toronto Pride gets better and better. My personal experience this year was overwhelming. It was incredible and the community of people I had the chance of meeting were exceptionally powerful individuals with the greatest hearts.
Since I have been back in Toronto this past month, lots of great things have happened. I have started my photography business and met with some amazing clients!
One set of clients I met with very early on was Claire & Albert. They came from Hong Kong a year ago to live in Canada. I was hired to take photos for their engagement in High Park when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.
Right now, I am trying to learn everything I possibly can about photography. From hyperfocal distance in nature photography to the creation of the sun using an off-camera flash, I want to learn it all. So, how about an intro into Astrophotography?
